Avery Johnson age 72 of Smithville passed away Monday July 27, 2026, at his residence. He was born March 23, 1954, to his parents the late Abel and Olive Kiser Johnson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph Johnson and Layne Johnson; sister, Una Warren. Mr. Johnson attended Sink Creek Baptist Church, and was a member of New Beginning Church, he was an entrepreneur and worked at Baker & Baker Employment Service. Avery worked at the DeKalb County Complex for 3 1/2 years. He is survived by wife, Gerri Johnson of Smithville; daughter, Deneilya (Stephen) Johnson Morton of Ky.; grandchildren Raven, Talia, Jordan; four sisters, Patricia (Ira) Potter, Freida Counts, Abby (Chester) Stevens, and Mavis (Reggie) Caudill; several nieces and nephews also survive. The family has honored Mr. Johnson's request to be cremated. A Celebration of Life will be held 1PM Friday August 7, 2026, at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bro. Michael Hale officiating. Visitation will be held Friday August 7, 2026, 12:noon until time of the service at 1PM at DeKalb Funeral Chapel. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is honored to care for the Johnson family.
